How many user accounts does our firm need?

User Account Rules:

1) You must start your firm account with an attorney account. That account will create your firm in the system, invite subsequent users, and serve as Administrator of your firm account.

2) Every attorney who will be counsel of record for clients must have an account in his or her name. Who the actual user of that account is will be up to you. Can you create an attorney account and have it used solely by a non-attorney staff member? Yes.

3) Every case can only have 1 attorney of record at a time. The settings allow you to change which attorney is assigned to a case, and allow for bulk reassignment, if needed. Each case can have as many or as few non-attorney staff members assigned to it as you want.

4) A non-attorney support staff member who will work on cases for multiple attorneys will have to have her or his own non-attorney account.

Examples:

Attorney Jane Doe is a solo practitioner who handles her cases by herself. She would need one attorney/firm account, and she would be the user of that account.

Attorney John Doe has Alex Paralegal working with him. John does not use the software and they intend for Alex to be the only user. They would create one attorney/firm account in John’s name, and Alex would use it on John’s behalf.

Attorneys Jane Doe and John Doe work in a firm together. They both have probate cases and Alex Paralegal works for both of them. Jane and John would both need attorney accounts, and Alex would need a non-attorney account. As part of the same firm, Alex’s non-attorney account would be able to create and access cases for both attorneys. The attorneys would each see their own cases in their user dashboards.

Attorney Jane Doe has Alex Paralegal, and 3 other assistants that will collaborate and handle parts of probate matters. Attorney Doe does not plan to use the software. She would need an attorney/firm account in her name. Alex could be the user on that account. All other staff members could then have their individual non-attorney accounts.

Attorneys John Doe and Jane Doe work in a firm together. They both have one paralegal that works strictly for their respective attorney. They could have two attorney accounts and have their respective paralegal as sole user of their attorney accounts. They would not have access to each other’s cases.
